Currently covering 4.9 billion hectares of the earth's surface, the Sahara Desert holds the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in the shade, some 58°C in Libya although an astonishing 45°C is average in many areas of the desert; a temperature high enough to kill off many forms of bacteria.
